Debi Besser - Automated Vehicles and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems
Autonomous vehicles are not here yet… but the building blocks of this technology are already showing up in today’s cars. Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are becoming common and new drivers are in danger of mis-using them. I will talk about many of the misconceptions about ADAS and why it is so easy to get complacent and distracted. We will also explore what might be coming next in this rapidly evolving area.   The goals of this class are to:
  • Provide attendees an understanding of automated vehicles levels and systems
  • Improve driver educators’ understanding of the nuances and limitations of ADAS
  • Spark their interest in what they may be seeing in the future of AV
Kelly Browning, Ph.D - Impact Teen Drivers: Stopping the Number One Killer of Teens
Reckless and distracted driving car crashes are the number one killer of young people. We have the power to stop these preventable car crashes using evidence-based programs and strategies. Come learn how to use our free evidence-based programs and materials to engage, educate, and empower others to make good decisions behind the wheel whether as a driver or passenger—making our roadways safer for all of us
3-goals the presenter wishes to accomplish:
  • Train participants to utilize the Impact Teen Driver’s “What Do You Consider Lethal?” and “Are We Living in a Dream World?” evidence-based programs. Participants will learn how to engage teens and their influencers using Impact Teen Drivers’ free materials and curricula.
  • Teach participants how to make the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) law relatable to teens and parents. Overview of strategies of Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) Laws including minimizing the highest risk situations for teen crashes including nighttime driving, teen passengers in vehicle, and electronic devices.
  • Provide participants with additional free resources they can incorporate into their teaching practice. Synopsis of additional classroom resources that educators may access for no cost to them.
James Brooke - The Importance of a Parent/Student night (The WHY and HOW)
A list of at least 3-goals the instructor wishes to accomplish.
1)  Every participate will understand WHY it is important to have a Parent/Student night in their Traffic Safety program. 
2)  Every participant will know HOW to organize and run a Parent/Student night. 
3)  Every participant will understand and consider implementing two Parent/Student night into their program (Information
​     and Speaker Panel).
Andy DeLeuw - Basic First Aid with CPR and AED
​American Heart Association guidelines for First Aid, CPR and AED.  How to recognize common injuries and illnesses, as well as the appropriate actions to take in order to assist an ill or injured person.  Course content meets OSHA guidelines.
3 goals the presenter wishes to accomplish:
  • 1) Participants learn basic guidelines for First Aid
  • 2) Participants learn CPR and AED use through hands-on practice in order to “save a life”
  • 3) Inspire confidence in participants to use the skills they learn in class
Doug Dahl  -  Sobriety Checkpoints and Automated Speed Enforcement
​Checkpoints and automated enforcement are both proven practices in reducing traffic fatalities, but they’re underutilized (automated enforcement) or not used at all (checkpoints) in Washington. This session will look at what they are, why we’re not using them effectively, and what we could expect if we did.
Three goals the presenter wishes to accomplish
  • Explain how checkpoints and automated enforcement work
  • Identify the hurdles to implementation
  • Explore possible outcomes of using checkpoints and automated enforcement
Morgan Cihak - DriveitHOME: a parent’s roadmap to teen driver safety
The National Safety Council created a program, DriveitHOME, specifically targeting parents and caregivers of new or soon – to – be teen drivers. DriveitHOME has educational and interactive components the parents can use to help their teen gain the experience they need behind the wheel. DriveitHOME also offers free resources including posters, flyers, videos, etc. to schools and workplaces to spread the word of this program to the parents they interact with.
Three goals the presenter wishes to accomplish
  • Educate participants on how to describe resources on DriveitHOME.org
  • Identify ways driver’s training instructors, DMV’s and other partners have in educating parents
  • Work with participants to identify what types of resources they need and want
Mary Graff - The Heart of The Driver’s License.
​A short video of a transplant recipient mother’s thanks, supporting why WA state legislated the organ, eye, and tissue donor registry and finds it in the best interest of our citizens for continuing education in this regard. We will discuss resources to meet the legal mandate requiring organ donation instructional materials being distributed in the classroom. Review general questions about organ and tissue donation that may come up in the classroom, and where you can refer students and parents for more information.
Goals:
1. Awareness of the legal mandate to distribute organ donation educational materials in the classroom.
2. Review resources for organ donation educational materials, intent for use, and how to obtain them.
3. Provide an opportunity for students and parents to get informed, and discuss organ donation prior to their visit to the DOL.

Maridith Ramsey - The Future of Vehicle Crashes and the Law
COURSE DESCRIPTION: The lecture and group discussion will cover the most important technology innovations in the transportation industry and the major impact they will have on the future of automotive insurance.  The primary focus will be on telematics devices (aka, car insurance tracing devices) and vehicle automation (aka driverless car technology).  Technologies, safety concerns, legal issues, insurance, etc. 
GOALS:  Attendees will gain a clear understanding of…
  1. …the true capabilities and limitations and problems with telematic devices and vehicle automation.
  2. …how these technologies may positively and negatively impact consumer safety.
  3. …the legal and privacy implications of these technologies in the context of automobile accidents and liability.
  4. …how these technologies may radically change the insurance industry.
Brett Robinson -  Where TSE Should Be Going - An Overview
Overview of ANSTSE Teacher Training System and Materials 
​This workshop will provide an overview of the ANSTSE teacher training system and identify how Section 3 of the Novice Teen Driver Education and Training Administrative Standards (NTDETAS) also referred to as the National Driver Education Standards, Attachment C and Attachment D of the NTDETAS and the ANSTSE model teacher training materials interrelate and support each other. ​Objectives
By the end of this workshop participants will be able to:
  • Describe the standards contained in Section 3 Instructor Qualifications in the NTDETAS
  • Identify and describe the five stages of the teacher training system contained in Attachment C of the NTDETAS
  • Identify and describe each part and module of the ANSTSE model teacher training materials
  • Describe the importance of integrated, concurrent and distributive learning for teacher training
  • Identify and describe the importance of classroom and BTW peer teaching practice
Status of Teen Crashes
​This presentation discusses young driver motor vehicle crashes and the contributing factors (e.g. impairment, passengers, distractions, speeding, not wearing a seat belt), young driver resources, the importance of standards, how to address vehicle crash fatalities and take action.
  • For attendees to understand the contributing factors of teen driver crashes
  • For attendees to learn about resources that can address vehicle crash fatalities
  • For attendees to learn the importance of standards in addressing vehicle crash fatalities
Where TSE Should Be Going
This presentation will provide an overview of recent driver education evaluations, non-traditional driver education, vehicle technology, the future of driver education and projects ANSTSE is currently working on.

David Scattergood
​The presentation will cover current drug use statistics and the true 
societal and health consequences of usage, why people take drugs and how 
drugs affect the mind. Free educational materials from Foundation for a 
Drug Free World will be highlighted including excerpts from the award 
winning “The Truth about Drugs documentary.”
  • To familiarize the audience with information about the types of drugs currently in use and extent of drug use locally.
  • To provide specific teaching tools and information to get the truth about drugs to students in a way that impinges.
  • To review the outcomes of drug use and the effects on the individual and society.
